End-users

AURORA gathers end-users in three CO2-intensive industries: refining, cement and materials recycling, for which there are few other options for achieving climate neutrality.

Heracles Cement Volos Plant
The HERACLES G.C.C. plant in Volos (Greece) is the largest cement production unit of HERACLES Group with cement production capacity around 2,4 Mt, with a privately owned port. Different transport and storation options of the captured CO2 will be considred in AURORA.

Motor Oil (Hellas) Corinth Refineries
MOH owns a refinery near Corinth, processing 185,000 barrels of crude oil per day. MOH is a supplier of both commercial oil companies in Greece, as well as exports its products abroad.

In addition, close to this industrial complex, there are at least 3 other energy intensive industries (petroleum refineries and cement plant). This cluster produces more than 7 million tonnes of CO2 annually. The produced CO2 can be connected to an export infrastructure for subsequent storage or used locally to produce various chemicals depending on the local needs and synergies. Though the MOH refinery is located closer to the Adriatic Sea than the HERACLES cement plant, the same storage options will be explored in AURORA.
